Spyderco named this pocket knife Assist after its main job. The Assist was designed for emergency / firefighting / rescue professionals (and well-equipped citizens) who rely on their knife and expect it to work flawlessly under pressure. With twenty-five years of experience in making rescue knives, Spyderco continues to offer new cutting-edge features, and the Assist model represents the newest and most significant creation in the knife category. The VG-10 stainless steel blade has a patented blunt tip and a SpyderEdge that is eighty percent serrated, usable for aggressive cutting of seat belts and fibrous materials. The last inch of the tip, left over from the PlainEdge, is a plain edge for finer cutting (think pencil sharpening). Using the Cobra Hood above the thumb hole, the blade can be opened quickly, and the thumb then serves as a thumb rest. The wavy cutout on the top of the blade (an idea from a Swedish firefighter) and along the inside of the handle allow a piece of rope to be placed between the half-open blade and the handle, and the blade closed like scissors, which is especially convenient for cutting rope on the body without fully opening the knife. The FRN handle is a moulded marvel of Bi-Directional Texture contours and bumps that ergonomically wrap around the palm. In the closed position it pushes the blade deeper into the handle, and a retractable carbide tip extends from the end of the handle for breaking glass. On the spine of the safety-orange handle is a loud warning survival whistle. Can be carried on the left or right side, or tip-up with the wire clip.
