The sheepsfoot blade probably derives from sailors, who found the rounded tip especially advantageous when the knife accidentally fell (we assume while working on a ship in rough seas), as it did not stab their foot when it hit the deck. It was also assumed that, according to the commanders of these ships, it was better for squabbling, hard-working sailors to carry a knife without a point, especially in port, when they let off steam after months at sea.
Spyderco rescue knives have long been favoured by sailors, and since then rescue workers, EMTs and forestry workers have used them with satisfaction in emergencies. Now available in a stainless version, the Atlantic Salt is a modified Rescue model made of the state-of-the-art stainless H-1 steel. The sheepsfoot pocket knife is available with a SpyderEdge serrated edge, which offers excellent cutting performance in and around sweet and salt water. The patterned FRN handle includes a shallow opener, available in black or bright yellow, and there is a reversible, black-coated titanium pocket clip for carrying in the left- or right-hand tip-up position. We recommend threading a strap or cord through the lanyard hole, especially when using the knife near water, so it does not fall and get irreversibly damaged or lost.
