Victorinox Grand Maitre Wood series. The Grand Maitre Wood forged knife series offers exceptional quality, balance and timeless elegance. Both amateur and professional chefs will love these knives for turning their kitchen into a palace and treating loved ones to extraordinary meals. The blade is made of rust-resistant, wear-resistant steel, evenly hardened and forged from a single piece. The knife has a full tang construction: the blade runs through the handle. The transition at the base of the blade is smooth and seamless. The bolster prevents the hand from sliding onto the blade. The elegant wooden handle, made from high-quality modified maple, has an ergonomic design that guarantees comfort and excellent handling even over longer periods. The production of modified maple is an environmentally friendly, patented process that increases the wood's durability and hardness and gives it its rich brown colour. With more than 130 years of experience, Victorinox is proud to produce high-quality knives. The brand offers a lifetime guarantee against material and workmanship defects. Dishwasher use is not recommended.
Modified maple
The production of modified maple is an environmentally friendly, patented process that uses a bio-based liquid to improve the properties of sustainable softwoods. The process continuously modifies the wood's cell structure, giving it excellent properties and a rich brown colour. There are various wood modification methods, all of which permanently change the structure of the cell walls, such as heat treatment, acetylation and polymer grafting. The modified wood we use is produced by forming solid furan polymers that bond into the wood cells. This increases the wood's stability, durability and hardness. The process is based on impregnation with furfuryl alcohol, a liquid produced from agricultural bio-products. A plant-based waste product is thus used to give another plant product, namely wood, enhanced strength and durability.
Step 1: Impregnation. The wood is soaked in a bio-based liquid. During impregnation, the furfuryl alcohol produced from the bio-based liquid is fixed into the wood so that its size remains stable.
Step 2: Curing and drying. After impregnation the wood is heat-dried, which polymerises the furfuryl alcohol. This step is called hardening. The polymers created in the wood cells by this process are very stable and cannot break down or leave the wood.
Step 3: Modified maple. After treatment, the wood's cell walls are about 50% thicker thanks to the stable, fixed polymers. This permanent modification of the wood's cells ensures outstanding stability, maximum hardness and a guaranteed long service life. The wood offers a high level of safety, as it rarely splinters and contains no toxins or chemicals. Modified maple is also resistant to rot, fungi and other wood-destroying microorganisms. It is a low-maintenance material that requires no treatment beyond normal cleaning, such as oiling or other impregnating solutions.
Innovation, design, functionality, tradition: together these make up the Made in Switzerland spirit of the Victorinox product portfolio. The world-famous Swiss Army knife has become an icon, and the same familiar Swiss quality and precision characterises all Victorinox product series: pocket knives, kitchen knives and tools, bags, watches, fragrances.
