Victorinox Grand Maître Wood series. The Grand Maître Wood forged knife series offers exceptional quality, balance and timeless elegance. The blade is made of rustproof, wear-resistant steel, evenly hardened and forged from a single piece. The knife is full tang, with the blade running through the handle. The transition at the base of the blade is smooth and seamless. The bolster prevents the hand from slipping onto the blade. The elegant wooden handle, made of high-quality modified maple, has an ergonomic design that ensures comfort and excellent handling even over longer periods. The production of modified maple is an environmentally friendly and patented process that increases the wood's durability and hardness and gives it its rich brown colour. Victorinox, with more than 130 years of experience, is proud to manufacture high-quality knives. The brand offers a lifetime guarantee against defects in material and workmanship. Dishwasher use is not recommended.
About modified maple. Modified maple is produced by an environmentally friendly, patented process that improves the properties of sustainable softwoods using a bio-based liquid. The process continuously modifies the cell structure of the wood, giving it excellent properties and a rich brown colour. There are various wood modification methods, all of which permanently change the structure of the cell walls. These include methods such as heat treatment, acetylation and polymer grafting. The modified wood we use is produced by forming solid furan polymers that bond to the wood cells. This increases the wood's stability, durability and hardness. The process is based on impregnation with furfuryl alcohol, a liquid produced from agricultural bio-products. Thus a plant-based waste product is used to give another plant product, namely wood, increased strength and durability.
Step 1: Impregnation. Impregnation is the process in which the wood is soaked in a bio-based liquid. During impregnation, the furfuryl alcohol produced from the bio-based liquid is fixed into the wood so that its size remains stable.
Step 2: Curing and drying. After impregnation, the wood is heat-dried, causing the furfuryl alcohol to polymerise. This step is called curing. The polymers created in the wood cells by this process are very stable and cannot break down or leave the wood.
Step 3: Modified maple. After treatment, the wood's cell walls are about 50% thicker thanks to the stable, fixed polymers. The permanent modification of the wood cell ensures outstanding stability, maximum hardness and a guaranteed long service life. The wood offers a high level of safety, as it rarely splinters and contains no toxins or chemicals. Modified maple is also resistant to rot, fungi and other wood-destroying microorganisms. It is a low-maintenance material that needs no treatment beyond normal cleaning, such as oiling or other impregnating solutions.
